Dear Kay,
Drop everything, including that pile of overdyed wool fabric, to go see what happens when a bunch of intrepid women decide to learn how to make a Christmas stocking.
This is, as you know, the New Ancestral Christmas Stocking from Mason-Dixon Knitting Outside the Lines.
Abby, who apparently is known to recycle yarn for her projects, taught an eight-week class in Christmas-stocking manufacturing, but it sounds like it was mostly an excuse for these women to get together to hang out. Excellent subterfuge for getting out of the house: claim to be taking a class!

I really like seeing the rainbow of red, green, lavender, brown–whatever–that shows up in their choices. And a big high five for getting through the terrifying Fair Isle argyle moment in this project.
This stocking is the sort of thing that you can stretch out over a luxuriant eight weeks, but I am just saying that it was possible for me to make one in 1.5 days, in the middle of June, because we had to have two stockings for those photos in the book, and I had made only one.
So: there’s still a good 10 days until Christmas, which by my calculation means a truly enterprising knitter, having procrastinated down to the nub, could cook up 6.6 of these stockings.

PS Abby, when she’s not teaching knitting and such, has a cute Etsy shop filled with slippers for young ones, recycled yarn, and whimsical this ‘n’ that, all handmade by her. Eclectic and cool.
